Straight vs Curved Artery Forceps: Differences, Uses & Which to Buy

Short answer: Straight artery forceps are used to clamp superficial, easily visible vessels and to hold sutures or drapes. Curved artery forceps are used deeper in the wound, where the curve lets the surgeon see the tip, follow tissue contours and place a ligature underneath the jaws. Most minor OT sets carry both, plus a few small mosquito forceps for fine vessels.

What artery forceps do

Artery forceps (haemostats) are locking, ratcheted clamps used to compress a bleeding vessel until it is tied or cauterised. The ratchet holds the jaws shut without the surgeon's hand, and the transverse serrations on the jaws grip the vessel without slipping.

Straight vs curved: the practical differences

Straight Curved
Best for Superficial vessels, holding suture ends, clamping drapes and tubing Vessels in deeper tissue planes, blunt dissection, placing ties
Tip visibility Good on the surface; the hand blocks the view in a deep wound Tip stays visible because the hand sits out of the line of sight
Ligation Harder to pass a tie behind the tip Curve points the tip up, so the tie slides under the jaws easily
Typical count in a minor set 2–4 2–4

Other patterns you will see

  • Halsted mosquito forceps (about 12.5 cm) have fine, fully serrated tips for small vessels in plastic, paediatric and superficial surgery.
  • Kocher artery forceps have 1x2 teeth at the tip. The teeth hold tough tissue such as fascia firmly, but they are too traumatic for delicate vessels.
  • Tonsil artery forceps are longer, straight or curved, for reaching vessels in the tonsillar fossa.

Care tips that make forceps last

  • Clean immediately after use; dried blood in the serrations and box joint causes pitting.
  • Autoclave with the ratchet open. Sterilising on a locked ratchet stresses the joint and weakens the grip.
  • Check that the jaws meet evenly and the ratchet holds on the first click. Replace forceps that spring open.

FAQ

Is a Kelly forceps the same as a mosquito forceps? No. Kelly forceps are larger (about 14 cm) and serrated only on the distal half of the jaw. Mosquito forceps are smaller with fully serrated, finer tips.

How many artery forceps does a minor OT set need? A common starting point is 4 straight, 4 curved and 2 mosquito, adjusted to your procedures.

Can I use Kocher forceps on vessels? It isn't recommended. The teeth crush vessel walls, so Kocher is kept for tough tissue.
