Cotton vs Poly-Cotton Scrubs: Which Fabric Is Best for Indian Summers?
Short answer: For long shifts in Indian summers, a cotton-rich poly-cotton blend in a light fabric (roughly 110–150 GSM) is the best all-round choice. It breathes almost like cotton but dries faster, wrinkles less, keeps its colour and survives frequent hot washes. Pure 100% cotton is the most breathable and softest, but it shrinks, creases, fades and stays damp with sweat for longer.
Cotton vs poly-cotton at a glance
| 100% cotton | Poly-cotton blend (cotton-rich) | |
|---|---|---|
| Breathability in heat | Excellent | Very good (better the higher the cotton share) |
| Sweat | Absorbs a lot, dries slowly | Absorbs well, dries faster |
| Wrinkles | Creases easily; needs ironing | Stays neater through a shift |
| Shrinkage and fading | More likely, especially in hot washes | Less shrinkage, better colour retention |
| Stains | Absorbs stains | Somewhat easier to wash out |
| Durability with daily washing | Wears thinner faster | Longer life |
How to choose
- Look at the blend ratio. 65–70% cotton or more keeps the fabric cool. High-polyester blends feel hot and clammy in Indian summers.
- Check the GSM. Lighter fabric (about 110–150 GSM) is cooler. Heavier fabric is more durable and less see-through but warmer.
- Pick darker colours for stain-heavy roles. Navy, black and wine hide marks better than light blue or green.
- Consider pure cotton if you have sensitive skin or work in non-AC areas without heavy fluid exposure, and accept the extra ironing and shorter life.

FAQ
Are poly-cotton scrubs hot? Cotton-rich blends in a light GSM are comfortable in heat. Blends with more than half polyester are the ones that feel hot.
Do 100% cotton scrubs shrink? Usually yes, especially in hot washes and tumble drying. Size up slightly or buy pre-shrunk fabric.
Which is better for stain resistance? Poly-cotton releases most stains more easily than pure cotton, and darker colours hide what remains.
